Balmuda’s The Clock: Experiencing Time Through Light and Sound

Balmuda’s The Clock isn’t about simply telling time—it’s about letting users feel it. Inspired by the elegance of a pocket watch, the device replaces traditional hands with the “Light Hour,” a slow-moving arc of illumination that sweeps across its face like a pendulum. This subtle motion, borrowed from the Foucault pendulum at Tokyo’s National Museum of Nature and Science, conveys time as a passage rather than a countdown, encouraging a more meditative experience.

Crafted from a solid block of aluminum, The Clock weighs 200 grams and fits comfortably in the palm, accompanied by a cloth carrying bag for portability. It charges via USB-C, making it a companion for travel as well as a centerpiece on the nightstand. The design emphasizes tactile presence and quiet elegance, letting users engage with time in a gentle, reflective way.

Beyond its light-based display, The Clock integrates three thoughtful functions. Relax Time plays seven original soundscapes—including rain, river, and fireplace—developed in-house and with external musicians. Sounds start softly three minutes before the alarm, gradually filling the room to wake users naturally. The focus timer spans one to sixty minutes, providing white noise beneath the countdown to aid concentration. All features are controllable through the Balmuda Connect app via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, keeping the experience seamless and intuitive.

The Clock stems from founder Gen Terao’s personal habit of playing rain sounds at night to fall asleep, without disrupting the room with light. Balmuda designed the device around this principle, recognizing that about half of daily life—sleep and personal time—benefits from quiet reflection. By keeping phones at a distance and allowing The Clock to gently mark the passage of hours, Balmuda transforms the everyday measurement of time into a calming, sensory experience.
