Ori introduces a radical rethink of one of the most familiar everyday objects. Developed by a new hardware startup led by MIT engineers and world-renowned origami innovators, Ori is the world’s first frameless umbrella—engineered to unfold like origami and built around the canopy itself as the structure.
Using NASA-grade folding principles, Ori replaces traditional ribs, fabric layers, and mechanical weak points with a single, integrated system. Its origami-engineered canopy compresses a full one-meter span into a pocket-sized 3.5 × 23 cm cylinder, transforming the umbrella into a compact, durable personal weather device. By eliminating conventional frames, Ori creates an entirely new category that merges material science, design, and structural innovation.
At the core of the design is a patented Miura-based folding architecture. This system allows the canopy to become rigid and self-supporting through a single degree-of-freedom motion, opening with one simple actuation. Precise crease patterns, advanced materials, and an internal locking mechanism give the umbrella its strength and stability, while maintaining an ultra-minimal exterior. Four patents covering the folding system, internal core, and locking components underscore the depth of engineering behind the design.
Beyond its mechanical innovation, Ori introduces a digital layer directly into the canopy. Integrated features include AirSense air-quality readings, MoodShift visual themes that respond to weather or user mood, Display Aura customizable color palettes, and Smart Touch one-tap open and close functionality. Together, these elements turn the umbrella into an interactive surface rather than a passive tool.
Set to launch in Founder Edition form in 2026, Ori marks a decisive shift for an object that has remained largely unchanged for over 150 years.
