TATRAS unveils its latest project, “Layers of Japanese Craft,” a limited-edition capsule collection born from a collaboration with traditional lacquer artisans in Wajima City, Japan. The initiative is an exploration of how ancestral craftsmanship can be reinterpreted within the framework of modern design, creating a seamless dialogue between heritage and innovation.
At the heart of the collection lies the visual poetry of layered lacquer, expressed through the traditional Bokashi-nuritechnique. This centuries-old method produces delicate color gradations and a depth that changes with light and movement. TATRAS reimagines this artistry in a new medium—translating the nuanced surface of lacquerware into the textures and tones of contemporary fashion. The result is a series of pieces where subtle hues transition fluidly across down jackets, pants, bags, and sunglasses, evoking the serene beauty of handcrafted lacquer while maintaining the brand’s functional precision.
In parallel, lacquer artist Kohei Kirimoto has created a collection of original works inspired by the same layered color concept. These art pieces will be showcased at the TATRAS flagship store in Ginza, establishing an immersive environment where fashion and craft coexist as one continuous expression.
The visual identity and direction of “Layers of Japanese Craft” are guided by YOSHIROTTEN, a multidisciplinary artist recognized for his mastery in portraying light, transparency, and layered perception. His approach amplifies the project’s core theme—the reimagining of traditional artistry through a contemporary lens.
Through this collaboration, TATRAS presents more than a collection; it introduces a philosophy of creation rooted in respect for craftsmanship while embracing the possibilities of modern expression. “Layers of Japanese Craft” becomes a bridge between past and present, where every surface tells a story of meticulous artistry and timeless innovation.
